FLASHBACK FRIDAY: ANNE OF GREEN GABLES {1}

Flashback Fridays posts are where I discuss books that have already been published, have usually been out for a year or more, and are very near and dear to my heart.

Anyone can participate by posting a Flashback Fridays post of their own on their blog. Then  stop be here and leave a link to your FF in the comments section of my weekly FF so others can enjoy it.

Enjoy and have fun with it!

ANNE OF GREEN GABLES

I had originally planned to talk about a Lauren Myracle novel for my first Flashback Fridays post, but I was inspired (by a random happenstance of flipping on my tv and catching the tail end of a Anne marathon) to discuss the classic Anne of Green Gables for my first FF post.

Anne of Green Gables, and that’s Anne with a most distinguished “e” mind you, is the beloved classic novel from Lucy Maud Montgomery, published in 1908. It is the first in the Anne series, which includes eight books total…and it is my personal favorite.

Anne of Green Gables is the heartwarming and funny story of red-headed, orphan Anne Shirley. Ah, that Anne girl, she is a precocious, smart, imaginative, and very talkative young girl who is mistakenly adopted by Marilla and her brother Matthew Cuthbert. The Cuthberts, wanting to adopt a boy, are sent Anne instead, but she quickly wins them over and finds a place in their hearts and they decide to keep her…thus she becomes Anne of Green Gables.

This first novel recounts Anne’s journey from a young girl to young college student, as she makes bosom friends, finds kindred spirits, and learns a great deal about friendship, humility, and family. As a young girl, I quickly fell in love with this spunky Anne girl and knew in my heart that she and I were kindred spirits. I can not count how many times I have watched the Sullivan Anne of Green Gables three movie series. When it comes on tv, I will literally drop everything and allow myself to be swept away to Prince Edward Island and into Anne’s whimsical world for a few hours.

Some of Anne’s most memorable moments include dyeing her dreaded red-hair green, smashing a slate over Gilbert Blythe’s head after he calls her Carrots, accidentally getting her bosom friend Diana Barry drunk, saving Diana’s sister’s life, wearing her first puffed sleeve dress, and winning the Avery Scholarship at college.

Anne taught me so many valuable life lessons that I still carry with me today, such as: our imaginations know no impossibilities, bosom friendships are never really broken, we must learn to love ourselves, its ok for girls to be smart and beat the boys, family is about love not blood, and kindred spirits never truly leave us.

That Anne girl will always have a special place in my heart and Anne of Green Gables will always have a place on my bookshelf.

Anne of Green Gables can be downloaded as an ebook from Project Guttenberg, which offers free book downloads [here]

This is one of my favorite Anne moments, both in the book and movies:

Do you have any thoughts or memories about Anne of Green Gables and my beloved Anne girl that you'd like to share? I sure hope so! Please leave any thoughts in the comments.
