Category: YA
Format: Paperback, 198 pages

Lissa thought that she and Kate, her beautiful and charismatic best friend, would always be close. Then one summer night Kate kissed Lissa-and Lissa kissed her back. Now Kate acts as if nothing happened and as if Lissa doesn't exist.
Suddenly forced to navigate her feelings and her classes without the protection of her more confident friend, Lissa feels truly alone. But with a keen sense of humor, a flaky new friend, and a book on lucid dreams, Lissa finds the bravery to examine her own desires and discovers that falling in love with the wrong person can be one way of finding your footing.

Kissing Kate is one of my absolute favorite Lauren Myracle books...which is truly saying something since I adore ALL her books. In this poignant novel, we are introduced to Lissa, who, along with her 10 year old sister lives with their uncle because their parents have died, Lissa is a shy, smart, funny girl who is best friends with the beautiful, outgoing Kate. The two have an unlikely, but strong friendship...until the night they share a passionate kiss, which changes everything, Kate wants to pretend it never happened, while Lissa can't forget it. As Lissa and Kate's friendship crumbles, Lissa makes friends with the eccentric Ariel and handicapped Finn. With the help of her new friends, Lissa begins a journey of self exploration and discovery.

This is a beautifully and subtly crafted novel. Myracle writes in such a profound and painstakingly honest way, that the result is a very breathtaking glimpse into the fragile world of adolescence. There are many issues explored in this book, yet no one issue over powers the rest. Yes, Lissa struggles with her feelings for Kate and her sexuality, but this book isn't just about whether or not Lissa is gay and what that means. This book is about Lissa finding herself, discovering the strong person within that she never knew existed, and finding her balance in such a shaky world.

This book has made me laugh, cry, rage, and most of all think. It has a great message and I think its the perfect book for any teenager out there who is struggling, confused, or just feels alone. If I were to rate this book it would get a dozen cupcakes...the really big ones smothered in icing, sprinkles, and cool sparkly rings placed on top for decoration.

Have you read Kissing Kate and have any comments or thoughts to share?! I'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments section.
